Ibiza Hairdresser

About Martin:

The name is Kelly, Martin Kelly AKA Martin Scissorhands I have been living & working in Ibiza since 2001. I am originally from Glasgow, Scotland I was nicknamed martinscissorhands amongst british & spanish, though the Spanish now call me Edwardo con manos tijeras (Edward Scissorhands).
That was a very interesting summer in hairdressing. Another winter passed & a new summer began....2003. This time another batch of wacky hairstyles began but mostly using 'the cutthroat razor

How it all began

Early Days

In my first season here, I discovered that the people of the island were very classical in their hairstyles, the younger people were a little more modern. The problem for me was that they all seemed to have the same hairstyle & even the same make fo clothes and shoes! This makes it all too easy to spot the difference between the British and the Spanish..

Language Barriers

I have more fun hairstyling when doing British customers hair, because I was able to communicate in my own language. After my first winter here & going into my second summer things began to change, I was now able to speak Spanish at a reasonable level. At the same time I began to work in an up-to-date salon which had a tattooing and piercing studio on the ground level. For me, this was a great combination of businesses, all in one & very popular amongst the British people.

New Styles

It was around summer 2002 when I started to invent a new type of hairdressing. It was probably inspired by the huge demand for tribal tattooing, the male clientel were asking for only two types of haircuts; The short Clippercut or Mohican cut (made popular by a certain famous football player), imagine how boring this was for me. Apart from doing a lot more work on female hairstyles, doing only two types of cuts on the males could make me sleep on my feet!

Doing What I want

This is when I was able to convince the reps from the tour groups to go that little step further. At this point it was just a matter of experimenting. After a while each customer wanted something a bit more different than the last until it catapulted into a competition of hairstyles. They allowed me a free hand to do anything & everything with there hair! Thats when the domino effect occurred, their clients/groups that come on holiday for one or two weeks started wanting the same styles as the ir reps, it seemed the more wacky the style the better. "Do what you want" was all I heard every day. oohh! How a hairstylist loves to hear that line.
